KURE BEACH AIKIDO IS 13 Years Old!!
Well it is Official.... As of July 7th... Kure Beach Aikido will be a Petulant Teenager! We will be "eye-rolling", "sneaking out at night", "mouthing off", "Texting too much", "Taking the car without permission", and getting into trouble as most teenagers do! We can't get caught sneaking a beer, 'cuz our "Dad" is a cop! For more on our History click HERE. |

Kure Beach Aikido gets an Official Name
|
 THE LATEST! Last week... Kure Beach Aikido received its Official Dojo Name. And it has been a long time coming.
"Back-In-The-Day" Toyoda Sensei would like to visit a particular Dojo before giving that dojo their name, so he could get a feel for the Dojo as a whole... the space, and the people in it. Because at the time, we were a small club, just starting out, we could not accomodate the logistics of a Seminar, and therefore could not get Toyoda Sensei down to Kure Beach before his passing. Many a long year has passed, and we have been know simply as Kure Beach Aikido. Although other Dojo have a "Name", most have a "Japanese Name" to go along with it. It wasn't until our last seminar that Richard Price Sensei requested a "Traditional/Official Dojo Name" from the A.W.A. Chief Instructor, Andrew Sato Sensei. We received the Dojo Name scroll and Richard Price Sensei officially revealed our name to the members of Kure Beach Aikido on Thursday June 25th 2009.

Weapons Classes on the Beach.... Suckas!

Tuesday June 9th we did Kumitachi and last Thursday June 11th was Kumijo. The darn sand gets everywhere, and if we throw each other... we all look like a bunch od Sugar Cookies.... but luckily.... we can shed our Gis and jump in the water to wash ourselves off. |

Well it is summer again at the beach.... and again we are competing with "The Beach".... so there will be a lull in attendance.... with that... we all need to spread the word about K.B.A. We are a CLUB and a not-for-profit one at that... and the way we continue on is to get new faces in the Dojo. So Spread the word.... K.B.A. is the best Deal in Town... $25.00 per month... No Strings, No Contracts... Just TRAINING!
ALSO... I have been playing with Flash a bit and trying to come up with a decent Photo Gallery thing.... I have posted 2 different types to see what I like... you will see them when you click them.... Don't complain... I only work here... -BK |

Jishukan Aikido Dojo Opens in Sanford, NC!
|
THE LATEST! On Wednesday, June 2, 2009, a new dojo addition was added to the AWA family. Tim Smith officially opened Jishukan Aikido Dojo in Sanford, NC. I attended the festivities on behalf of Sato Sensei to present Tim his black belt and welcome the new members into the AWA family. We had 13 people participating with many more watching the first class and inquiring about the art in the busy gymnastics facility. That was quite a good number of people showing up for the first class. Tim had calls during the week from two magistrates, a judge, a physician and several more law enforcement officers interested in starting classes. I presented Tim a painted Jishukan Aikido scroll for display in the dojo. Lynne Price made a nice floral arrangement for the opening celebration. Tim has a 50' X 50' mat area with plenty of room for growth. This school will be a real plus for the residents of Sanford, NC and the surrounding area. We wish you the best Tim and stand ready to assist you any way we can. Yours in Aiki, Richard Price

A Must-Read for all women out there.

A quick note by BK Sensei: I have been accused of favoring the ladies during training by a few people... and I tell them point blank that I do! The reason is that, especially for the women in college, there are a lot of opportunities to be attacked or have "unwanted advances while out and about"... So I do EVERYTHING I CAN to train the ladies to get out of trouble "QUICK".... The Empowerment of Women is one of the things that is of great satisfaction for me in Aikido.... Building Strong Family Bonds

Bragg. I know our students learned a great deal from these families. This is the beauty of teaching and sharing. |
Building Strong Family Bonds
New: K.B.A. is looking forward to another "Building Strong Family Bonds" session this August and September. We had a great time with all the Kids and their Moms.... below is the last session.
On April 3-4th, 2009 the Kure Beach Aikido Club did a special weekend retreat for the wives and children of deployed Ft. Bragg soldiers called to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event was held at the Marriott Hotel in Carolina Beach, NC. The theme for the weekend was titled, "Building Strong Family Bonds." The Mom's were brought in the third hour on Saturday for the children to demonstrate what they had learned. This also allowed the Mom's to participate and have some quality one on one time with their kid's. A special homework assignment was given to the children. The children agreed to invite their Mom's on at least a thirty minute walk the following week. During the walk they were to tell their Mom's three things that had happened during their day and ask about three things that happened in their Mom's day. We hope this will facilitate quality time for good communication and lead to more frequent walks.
Special thanks to all of the KBA members who participated and worked with the children: Bill King, Chad Lanier, David Heglar, Tony Rivera, John Lothes, Laura Hiles, Beth Meador, Orlando Garrett. Thanks to Lynne Price who fed the KBA members lunch after the Saturday session. |

We are often asked "How can you charge such a low rate?" - Well the answer is simple... we at K.B.A. practice for the Love of the art of Aikido. All the Instructors have other professions, and Kure Beach Aikido is run as a Not-For-Profit Club. We are an Incorporated Business for Insurance and Liability Reasons, however, the Instructors draw NO SALARY or take any compensation from monthly dues collected. All money goes to pay for our training space and to continue our Out-Reach Programs, buy mats and equipment, and to Sponsor Students when needed. We Encourage you to train with WHOMEVER you wish... the more training you get, means you become a better student and Instructor. Come to our CLUB... we really want you! -BK |

Uniforms...
|
K.B.A. is a club, and is Not-For-Profit. Because of that we do not re-sell uniforms and then have to collect tax on them. If you need a GI for practice you can purchase them from... EBOGU or Century Martial Arts... Both supply excellent uniforms... A note for the Parents of Children in the Kid's Class.... You can purchase a regular WHITE Karate Uniform for them if you like, instead of getting a Judo/Aikido uniform. They are significantly cheaper, and with the rate the kids are growing, it is more economical to keep them in this sort of a uniform because it can be replaced inexpensively. K.B.A. to teaches Girl Scouts in better methods of Cookie Sales!
|
 NEW: K.B.A.'s Chief Instructor Richard Price Sensei, assisted by Bill King Sensei and John Lothes Sensei conducted a self defense training session last Saturday for the Girl Scouts "Yu Best Defense" Badge Program. There were 18 in attendance ranging from 9 yrs to 18 yrs... and some MOMS!The instruction covered the basics of Awareness of your surroundings, how NOT to look like a victim by using good body posture, and some very basic Self Defense Techniques to get out of trouble quickly. The class was 3 hrs long and fun was had by all. We at Kure Beach Aikido do all we can to empower young women, and will tirelessly continue our community outreach! |

The Kid's Class is growing again.... and K.B.A. would love to see more little faces on the mat... Aikido is a great confidence builder, an excellent to calm the mind and unite it woth the body... If anyone has any ideas on what we can do to get more childern on the mat, please let me know. I will generate the necessary information to pass aroud... Well there have been many pages updated... lots of new stuff to look at.... Updates are continuing... stand by... more stuff on the way... -BK P.S. - Many people have asked... what is that on your knuckles.... well it says "GRFX THUG" (Graphics Thug)... and has been "Photoshopped In".... I do not have my knuckles tattooed. Just an FYI. |
